Virginia Barrett
About Me
I am an artist, poet, writer, editor, and educator with an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco, and an MAT from The Rhode Island School of Design. I also studied at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Nice, France. The Vessels We Carry Keep Us Alive is my seventh book of poems (Saint Julian Press, 2026); my sixth editing project is YELLOW: a Hue Are You anthology (Jambu Press, 2026). Currently I teach in through Artists in the Schools (Gallery Route One) and California Poets in the Schools, and am a freelance editor and book designer.
About My Work
Often incorporating my poems into paintings, I work in watercolor, gouache, acrylic, pastel, mixed media, and photography. Drawn to shape, bold colors, and expressive line, I have shown in San Francisco galleries including Inclusions Gallery, Incline Gallery, Sweet Sanctum, and SomArts. Forms in nature deeply influence my work, as well as sculptural pieces from many cultures. I am also drawn to abstract explorations involving meditative gestures and stream of consciousness discoveries.
